BGC ices gambling talk on football social media sites
By admin | | 0 Comments |

The UK Betting and Gaming Council (BGC) is asking football clubs to refrain from discussing and promoting gambling on their social media sites in as part of an effort to avoid triggering problem gamblers. It’s move that may seem extreme to the layman, but will likely help keep UK gambling operators a step ahead of UK gambling regulators. Guidelines for how football clubs should handle discussions of gambling were sent out by the BGC late last week and utilize a plea from 50 former gambling addicts to make the case. They pointed out that seeing their favorite club site promoting gambling caused them “distress” and “encouraged” them to place wagers. As an effort to avoid these triggering moments, the BGC is recommending that football clubs refrain from promoting gambling operators or bonus offers and their “organic tweets”. This is a nod to the reality that gambling offers are ubiquitous on social media and that no one is really more than a click or two away from them on the internet anyways. BGC officials sent a letter detailing the new code of conduct to 11 football clubs, as well as to social media operators. In a statement reported on by SBC News, Brigid Simmonds OBE, Chairman of the BGC described the importance of the new standards saying, “Our members rightly have a zero tolerance approach to gambling by under-18s, so as an industry we are understandably concerned that children may be exposed to betting adverts on social media platforms. Our new guidelines make clear the standards expected of football clubs when they post gambling promotions on social media, and I look forward to them being put into practice as soon as possible.” The BGC guidelines are not legally binding, but members of the BGC who wish to remain in good standing are expected to abide by them. Elliott hopes for Tiger green light
By admin | | 0 Comments |

Gordon Elliott admits it will be disappointing should Tiger Roll not run in the Randox Grand National after being allotted 11st 9lb - but underlined the final decision will rest with owner Michael O'Leary. The diminutive 11-year-old was denied the chance to win the race three times in a row - something not even Red Rum managed - by the Covid-19 pandemic, but Elliott is training him to peak on April 10. However, it has been well documented that O'Leary and his brother Eddie felt he needed plenty of help from handicapper Martin Greenwood for him to stand any chance of winning the race again, warning he would not run if he was rated "in the 160s or 170s".Tiger Roll won in 2018 from a mark of 150 and defied a 9lb rise 12 months later. This year he is off 166, despite pulling up on his last appearance at Cheltenham in November."He has got 166 and he won off 159 two years ago when the race was last run. He seems in good form at home and we are looking forward to the race," said Elliott. "You are always hoping you are going to be a couple of pounds less than what you have been given, but to be honest we will just smile and take it. "I have to concentrate on training the horse and I just hope his owner lets the horse run in the race for the public. Everyone will be looking forward to seeing the horse run again in the Grand National, but Michael will make that decision. "It will be disappointing for everyone if he doesn't turn up, but as you know he makes the decisions. He is 7lb higher than what he won off before, but it is probably fair enough."If you look at him he is not the biggest horse in the world, but he really seems to enjoy those fences."Regarding his run in November, Elliott said: "He made a mistake the last day at Cheltenham and he was lame after the race, but thankfully he is OK now."We injected his stifles behind and thankfully he is back sound and moving very well and we are very happy with him at the moment. We will just keep our heads up and hopefully he will be OK for the rest of the season."He is in the Boyne Hurdle at the weekend, but the ground is very soft, so we might not run him. If it isn't too bad he will run, as he has run in it the last two years."He is in good form and if the ground is right for him we would like to run him as it's a race he has won before."When contacted on Tuesday, Eddie O'Leary said: "We've said all we're going to say on the matter and will be offering no further comment."Elliott has 15 other entries, but that has already been slimmed down by the news Delta Work is out for the season and the likes of Aforementioned, Monbeg Notorious and Roaring Bull are highly unlikely to make the cut.Of his other hopefuls he added: "I would say I would hopefully run Presenting Percy (11st 9lb). He has had a little setback, but hopefully I will have him back for the National. Tiger Roll, The Storyteller (11st 8lb) and Alpha Des Obeaux (10st 9lb) will all hopefully go."I thought one down at the bottom with 10st 6lb could be very well handicapped, a horse called Milan Native. He has had a wind operation since his last run and he is one I am looking forward to for the Grand National this year."Three horses are weighted 1lb higher than Tiger Roll - Nigel Twiston-Davies' Bristol De Mai, Tiger Roll's Cheltenham conqueror Easysland and Gold Cup runner-up Santini.Magic Of Light, second to Tiger Roll two years ago, has 10st 13lb, Ladbrokes Trophy winner Cloth Cap has been given 10st 5lb while Welsh National winner Secret Reprieve needs a little bit of luck to secure a place as he is on 10st 1lb.

2021 Australian Open: What to Watch on Tuesday Night
By admin | | 0 Comments |

Rod Laver Arena | 11 p.m. TuesdayAndrey Rublev vs. Daniil MedvedevAndrey Rubley and Daniil Medvedev secured the ATP Cup for Russia earlier this month, with neither player losing a singles match throughout. In their three meetings on the ATP Tour, Medvedev has come out on top each time, including in the quarterfinals of the U.S. Open in September. This may be Rublev’s chance to finally overcome his friendly rival. He has looked particularly dominant, not dropping a set throughout the tournament. His match against Casper Ruud ended after only two sets when the Norwegian withdrew with an injury. Going into the quarterfinals, Rublev has led the field in both percentage of first service points won and second service points won, a sign of how hard it has been for opponents to break his serve.Medvedev has also been playing well, aside from a chaotic, disorganized third round match against Filip Krajinovic. He has now won 18 matches in a row, with his last loss coming in October at a tournament in Vienna. Although the fast surface fits Medvedev’s flat baseline shots, Rublev’s open stance is well suited in defense, and we’re sure to see many dynamic, aggressive point.Rod Laver Arena | 3:30 a.m. WednesdayRafael Nadal vs. Stefanos TsitsipasRafael Nadal, the No. 2 seed, has moved smoothly through the first four rounds, no surprise for a player with 20 Grand Slam titles. Although Nadal won his only Australian Open title over a decade ago, he has reached the finals on four other occasions since, and is a clear favorite in his half of the draw to do so again. Nadal’s powerful topspin shots are well-suited to clay courts where he can drag opponents around with tightly angled shots. Nadal’s ability to exploit his opponent’s weaknesses with relentless pressure can break most players on their best days.Stefanos Tsitsipas, the ATP finals winner in 2019, is a study in unpredictability. The fifth seed has a capable all-court game, but lacks the consistency to execute match after match. The 22-year-old has worked to improve this aspect of his game, but needed five sets to push back unseeded Thanasi Kokkinakis in the second round. After receiving a walkover in the round of 16, Tsitsipas will be well rested and hoping for an advantage against one of the most mentally tough players on tour.

By admin | | 0 Comments |

Leicester City may be many people’s picks as dark horses in the Europa League this season. They will be looking to take control of their round of 32 tie against Slavia Prague on Thursday evening. Europa League Preview Slavia Prague could have been pleased with their showings in the group stages of the Europa League this season, as they managed to finish second in Group C above Hapoel Beer-Sheva and Nice. They finished just three points behind Bayer Leverkusen in the group, but regardless a passage through to the next round would have been the target that they set themselves before a ball was kicked. They scored eleven goals in the six games that they played in the group stage, but did conceded ten goals. Transferring their domestic form to European action would be their aim on Thursday night, as they have been in excellent form in the Czech First Division. They are ten points clear at the top of the league, and haven’t lost a single game all season. However, this could be a huge challenge for them against Premier League opposition. Leicester have continued to grow as a team throughout the 2020-21 season, but the one thing that has alluded Brendan Rodgers so far has been a piece of silverware. Many consider Leicester to be leading contenders in the Europa League, as they have quality at both ends of the field and are capable of troubling the best sides when they are at the top of their game. The Foxes sailed through the group stages of the Europa League, as they finished top of Group G on goal difference from Braga. They suffered just one defeat, but were strong defensively. They conceded just five goals in the group stages, with three of those coming in a 3-3 away draw against Braga. Slavia Prague vs Leicester City Team News Slavia Prague will have a number of injury concerns to contend with, as David Hovorka and Tomas Malinsky are both doubts. Meanwhile, the travelling Foxes will be without James Justin, Wesley Fofana and Ayoze Perez. Sensational Serena through to Osaka showdown
By admin | | 0 Comments |

Serena Williams came through a huge test of her Australian Open title credentials to beat Simona Halep in a high quality quarter-final and reach the last four at Melbourne Park for the ninth time; The 39-year-old American will next face Naomi Osaka for a place in Saturday's final Last Updated: 16/02/21 10:31am Serena Williams defeated Simona Halep to reach the semi-finals of the Australian Open Serena Williams turned back the clock to make it through to the Australian Open semi-finals where she set up a blockbuster clash against Naomi Osaka. Williams made it through to her 40th Grand Slam semi-final after gaining revenge for her Wimbledon final loss to Simona Halep.Halep produced a sensational performance to stun Williams 6-2 6-2 at the All England Club in 2019 - one of four Grand Slam finals the American has lost since winning her 23rd singles title in Melbourne four years ago. Williams began this match with a determination to ensure there was no repeat and powered her way to a 6-3 6-3 victory. Williams gained revenge for her Wimbledon final loss to Halep Williams, who mixed 24 winners with 33 unforced errors over the contest, has not won a major since her seventh Australian Open triumph in 2017 and next faces in-form Japanese third seed Naomi Osaka with a place in the final on the line.In her on-court interview, Williams said: "I definitely think this is the best match this tournament and obviously I had to go up against the number two in the world. I knew that I had to do better and that's what I did, so I'm excited."The quality of the second set did not match the first, with Williams making a host of unforced errors, but Halep could not take advantage. The best I have seen @serenawilliams play in years! Movement and defensive skills were impressive. Huge semifinal vs @naomiosaka. Whoever wins this one in my opinion goes on to win the title.— Greg Rusedski (@GregRusedski1) February 16, 2021 Osaka will not be so generous in what will be a first Grand Slam meeting between the pair since their notorious US Open final in 2018, when Williams received a game penalty for verbally abusing umpire Carlos Ramos and Osaka's first major title was accompanied by deafening boos and whistles.Since then the Japanese player has won two more major titles and is unbeaten on the biggest stage since last year's Australian Open. 52 - Chris Evert44 - Martina Navratilova40 - Serena Williams37 - Steffi Graf Williams (left) receives congratulations at the net from Halep Williams shot out of the blocks on Tuesday, moving into a 2-0 lead with a combination of extreme power and incredible angles.Halep fought back to level but Williams forged ahead again and confidently served out the set.The 39-year-old, who is once again two matches away from finally equalling Margaret Court's record of 24 slam singles titles, made a shaky start to the second set, spraying unforced errors as Halep moved into a 3-1 lead. But the Romanian was unable to find the level to put doubts into Williams' mind and the 10th seed finished the match with a run of five games in a row. For Halep, who reached the semi-finals last year and was losing finalist in 2018, it was back to the drawing board as she looks to add to her two Grand Slam titles at the French Open and Wimbledon.Don't forget to follow us on skysports.com/tennis, our Twitter account @skysportstennis & Sky Sports - on the go! Root: Pitch not to blame for England defeat
By admin | | 0 Comments |

England captain Joe Root says team "outplayed" by India on tough surface as they lose second Test by 317 runs; skipper feels his men can learn from the way the hosts found control with the ball and batted calmly; third Test in Ahmedabad from February 24 Last Updated: 16/02/21 10:01am 0:56 England captain Joe Root says his squad must not get too down about their heavy defeat in the second Test against India. England captain Joe Root says his squad must not get too down about their heavy defeat in the second Test against India. Joe Root refused to blame the spin-friendly Chennai pitch for England's thumping defeat to India in the second Test - and has urged his side to learn from the difficult conditions they faced. England were spun out for 134 and 164 at MA Chidambaram Stadium on a dusty surface as India wrapped up a 317-run victory on day four to level the four-match series at 1-1.Rohit Sharma and Ravichandran Ashwin completed hundreds for India and Root says the hosts showed England a template for scoring runs on unhelpful tracks for batsmen. Root says his side must learn from the challenging conditions they faced in Chennai (Pic credit - BCCI) "I wouldn't say it was a good pitch but it made for very exciting cricket and it was not the reason we lost the game. We were outplayed in all three departments," said the England skipper."For us, it's a bit of an education. It was a surface that spun a huge amount and bounced more than we anticipated but we should take that as a learning and be better for it the next time we experience conditions that are similar."The toss was an important one to win - but it wouldn't have guaranteed us a win either. India showed you can score runs and found a way of managing a very tricky surface."Our batters need to learn from how India rotated strike, while what I took from how they played was how calm and unflustered they were. When a delivery really misbehaved, they didn't waver from their game-plan." Ravichandran Ashwin (pictured) and Rohit Sharma scored centuries for India in the second Test (Pic credit - BCCI) Root - whose side will be looking to bounce back in the day-night third Test in Ahmedabad from February 24 with their six-match winning streak in overseas Tests having been snapped - also felt his bowlers could have been more frugal on day one when India reached 300-6 after electing to bat."We have to find ways of building pressure for long periods of time with the ball, bowling six balls at one batter, which India made very difficult for us."Can we string maidens together and force wickets through very disciplined passages of play? I think India did that better than us."On day one we could probably have been a bit tighter and squeezed the game, making it hard for them to score freely. The four-match Test series is tied at 1-1 heading into the third Test, a day-night fixture in Ahmedabad from February 24 "We have to learn from the opposition, who played very well, but we are 1-1 in the series and there are two very important games to come."We are very excited about that because of how well we played in the first game. We are very much in this series. It's set up very nicely."We have to stay level. We don't get above our station when we win and it's not all doom and gloom when we have tough weeks."It is very important we stay level as a team. We have to learn but that is one thing we have done well in recent times so hopefully we can take that into the rest of the series." 0:52 Root says he understands Moeen Ali's decision to leave England's bio-secure bubble and return home to his family Root says he understands Moeen Ali's decision to leave England's bio-secure bubble and return home to his family Root - who also confirmed that all-rounder Moeen Ali will miss the rest of the series having opted to fly home - said Ben Stokes only bowled two overs in the game for tactical reasons, not due to injury."Ben is fit and able to bowl but, on that surface, you look at the overs of seam bowled and it was minimal," said Root."I'm sure Ben will have an impact on this series with the ball as he did in the first game. He can grab big moments and turn them on their head."Pressed on whether he wanted to include the rested James Anderson, who had starred with a scintillating spell of reverse-swing bowling on day five of the first Test, Root added: "It was discussed. "But we need to look at the series as a whole. The pink-ball game looks an exciting opportunity for someone like him to have a real impact."Follow text commentary of the day-night third Test between India and England in Ahmedabad on skysports.com and the Sky Sports app from 8.30am on Wednesday, February 24. .
