A Set small text size A Set the default text size A Set large text size Super Bowl 55 was the absolute WORM. The Worst of Recent Memory! A one-sided contest saw betting underdogs the Tampa Bay Buccaneers run out convincing 31-9 winners. The game was a horror show for Kansas City, whose defence was barely allowed to play by the zebras. Some of the early penalties on the Chiefs defence were purely fanciful officiating and kept some Tampa Bay drives rolling. This resulted in Tom Brady throwing his first-ever first-quarter Super Bowl touchdown. What a crazy stat. Brady finished up throwing three touchdown passes including the first two to his longtime partner in crime, Rob Gronkowski, as they surpassed Joe Montana and Jerry Rice for the most passer to receiver touchdowns in Super Bowl history. On the other side, Patrick Mahomes was flustered, particularly in the second half where he was continuously forced to run up to 20 yards backwards and fling desperate passes to his well-covered receivers. Towards the end, it got quite brutal for Mahomes who took a number of heavy hits from a ruthless Buccaneers defence. The ESPN commentary for some reason featured two guys I hadn’t heard all season long. While the US national coverage was presented by the entertaining A-team of Jim Nance and Tony Romo, we in Australia didn’t even get the B-team. Instead we suffered through the Zzz-team, who kept making obscure references about Australia. Thanks a lot, ESPN. The halftime show was abysmal. Whatever happened to legendary rock bands taking the Super Bowl stage? The young guy tried hard and reportedly spent $7 million of his own cash on the show. He had a couple of catchy tunes and I have nothing against having solo artists do the show, but it would be nice to see a big stadium rock band at least every other year. After all, it’s in a big stadium! Super Bowl 55 was the absolute WORM for me, after an absolute WORM of a year for everybody. But I take solace in another amazing chapter for the GOAT, Mr Tom Brady, and an end to the nonsensical suggestions that his championship feats will ever be surpassed or even equalled. End rant.
